New discussion forum and researchers collaboratory!

From last week on the forum Nederlandse Volkstellingen is open for public. Log in and you can immediately participate in discussions on several subjects, which are included in the collaboratory for researchers. For example you can ask a question or share ideas about a subject. It is also possible to add a new subject. If you want to know how the forum works, take a look at User instructions (only in Dutch). [The discussion forum is removed, March 2007.]

The collaboratory is a virtual workplace that aims at supporting researchers in their analyses of census data. Researchers can share information on e.g. their research projects, publications and datasets.

Workshop researchers 2006: A retrospect

In advance of the conference on September 29th 2006, about 30 researchers met in a workshop held on January 27th 2006 at NWO in The Hague. The objective was to inform each other about their historical/demographic research ideas. This workshop was organized by NIWI-KNAW and DANS as part of the Dutch census digitization project.

Systematic table searching

NIWI-KNAW has developed a search system, which makes it possible to search systematically into the census tables. You can search on subjects, keywords, provinces, census year, geographical level, and personal data (e.g. sex, age).

You can place your comments on the forum or by filling in the reaction form.

Call for papers for conference on 29th September 2006 and congress book

“Twee eeuwen leven, wonen en werken in Nederland (19e en 20e eeuw). Een studie op basis van de digitale Nederlandse Volkstellingen 1795-2001”. This is the title of the upcoming conference on 29th September 2006 at NWO in The Hague. This conference will be the final event within the Life Courses in Context project. At the end of 2006 the proceedings will be published in one volume.

New records

The digitization of the Dutch Census Data is a current project. This means that every month new records (Adobe PDF format and MS Excel tables) will be added to this website. On the subpage new records you will find an overview of recently added records.

CBS microdata files available at DANS

Statistics Netherlands makes it possible to access microdata files through DANS. These public-use data involve secured 1 percent samples from the microdata files regarding the censuses of 1960, 1971 and 2001. This service is part of the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series-International project (IPUMS-International).

Microdata files 1960, 1971, and 2001 On Site

Recently, researchers may consult the complete microdata files of the censuses 1960, 1971, and 2001 On Site at Statistics Netherlands. This concerns only researchers who work at institutes, which are recognized by the Central Commission for Statistics (CCS), e.g. universities and ministries.

Congress Life Courses in the 19th and 20th Century

Concluding congress of the NW0-Groot program 'Life courses in context'

The concluding congress of 'Life Courses in context' will take place on Friday April 11th, 2008. The meeting will be held at the International Institute for Social History (IISH) in Amsterdam. Funded by NWO-Groot, the last five years attempts have been made to reconstruct the life courses of about 40,000 Dutchmen born between 1863 and 1922. Data on aggregated level from 1859-1947, like population censuses and counts of labor force, were added to these data on individual level. Read more >>

Future of the project

Data Archiving and Networked Services (DANS) participates in the completion of the 1795-1971 Dutch Censuses project. The missing tables are being corrected and shall be added to the website in due time. DANS is recently involved in evaluation of the results of a digitization test of hand-written census tables from the archive of the Statistics Netherlands. Images of the tables from the census of 1947 have already been made available through this website. If the OCR processing of the scans will show good results DANS will start a large project of digitization of the hand-written tables of all the census years archived at the Statistics Netherlands.
